1912-1952

Brisbane Tug & Steamship Company Inc

A Tug & Steamship company started a resort on Bribie Island at Bongaree in 1912.

1912

The Jetty

In December 1911 the Brisbane Tug & Steamship Company was granted a special lease of 12 acres of land for the purpose of a jetty.

1913

Post Offices

A Petition sent to the Deputy Postmaster-General in 1913 requested a twice-weekly mail service from Brisbane to Bribie.

1918

First Private Store

Alfred Hall and Arthur (Artie) Bestmann built the first private grocery shop on Bribie Island.

1923-24

Building the Road to Woorim

A sandy walking track was the only way to go for a surf until 1924.

1923 - 1936

SS Doomba

The 1920s were a boom time for Bribie Island and it became evident that the SS Koopa, even with the help of the other Tug Company ships, needed a sister ship to help transport tourists to Bribie Island.

1924-present

State School

On 2nd August 1923 a petition was received by John Huxham, MLA and Minister for Public Instruction by five parents to open a provisional school for Bribie children.

1927-present

Bowling Club

A group of fishermen were the originators of the Bribie Bowls Club in 1927. Brisbane based bowlers as well as fishermen, were keen to establish a club at Bongaree.

1928

St Peter's Anglican Church Bongaree

Prior to St Peter's opening in 1928 occasional church services services were held in the Dance Hall.

1930s

Surf Lifesavers Club

The Surf Club at Woorim has been a popular destination for tourists and locals on Bribie Island since 1933.

1937

The Myth of Bribie the Basket Maker

The story of Bribie - the Basket Maker was penned by Thomas Welsby, while living on Bribie Island in 1937.

1939-1945

Bribie War Years

The Military installations on Bribie Island were built between 1939 and 1942.
